Posts so far for parshat Eikev

Year 1
  • Man Does Not Live On Bread Alone
    • A main point of the verse is that Hashem wanted them to realize that He was the source of sustenance. Thus first He afflicted them, by exposing them to hunger, and then provided them with this food, the manna. Why? If they had bread, they would not have learned this all-important lesson. Bread is but one instance of it, but man does not live on bread. He lives on whatever Hashem deigns to grant - כָּל-מוֹצָא פִי-ה.

This relates, I think, to the portion of Ekev that I blogged about this week -- the second paragraph of the shema. The central message in both of these passages is that the abundance on which we depend (both physically and spiritually; both bread and manna; both the grain we literally eat, and what we grow in the fields of the heart) comes from Adonai, and that it is incumbent on us to be grateful and to love Adonai with all our hearts, in order that that sustenance may continue to flow.
