Why, according to Tg Yonatan, should the spies be swift-minded?

Summary: My answer -- they shouldn't. Targum Pseudo-Yonatan has a typographical error in need of correction.

Post: Moshe sends out men, in the beginning of Shlach:

1. The Lord spoke to Moses saying,
א. וַיְדַבֵּר יְ־הֹוָ־ה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר:
2. "Send out for yourself men who will scout the Land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel. You shall send one man each for his father's tribe; each one shall be a chieftain in their midst."
ב. שְׁלַח לְךָ אֲנָשִׁים וְיָתֻרוּ אֶת אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי נֹתֵן לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ אֶחָד אִישׁ אֶחָד לְמַטֵּה אֲבֹתָיו תִּשְׁלָחוּ כֹּל נָשִׂיא בָהֶם:

What sort of anashim? Onkelos just translates it as guvrin, men. But Targum Yonasan has, instead, guvrin charifin, גוברין חריפין!

Charif means sharp. Or it means blasphemer, as in chiruf vegiduf. Why should Hashem command Moshe specifically to send such men? Maybe it somehow means fierce men?

After thinking about it for a while, I came to the conclusion that this seems somewhat likely to be a typographical error. While חריפין means sharp / swift, or blaspheming, חפירין means scouts or spies. See, for the only example I could find, but the only example I need, Iyov 39:29:

כט  מִשָּׁם חָפַר-אֹכֶל;    לְמֵרָחוֹק, עֵינָיו יַבִּיטוּ.29 From thence she spieth out the prey; her eyes behold it afar off.

The Targum on Iyov uses the same root. Jastrow (on חפר) puts this as a transference from the primary meaning of 'dig' to a secondary meaning of 'plan, espy'.

So Targum Yonasan is being slightly expansive here, and does not leave it as regular men, but renders it as scouts / spies. This is a rather uncommon adjective / noun, and so some scribe along the way transposed the two letters in the course of copying it.

Furthermore, compare with additions later in Targum Yonatan, with גובריא מאלליא inserted in pasuk 4.

And indeed, near and dear to the subject at hand, we see in parshat Devarim, on the matter of sending scouts to spy out the land:

Anyway, that would be my best guess, and it seems rather tempting. But others explain it as it stands. Thus, Perush Yonatan writes:

He associates it with Midrash Tanchuma which has:
שלח לך אנשיםזה שאמר הכתוב: כחומץ לשנים וכעשן לעיניים, כן העצל לשולחיו (מש' י כו).
גיבורים היו המרגלים שהיו מוציאים לשון הרע על הארץ, שנאמר: וידרכו את לשונם, קשתם שקר וגו' (ירמ' ט ב).
and later:

Thus, this is interpreting them as either chashuvim, or tzadikim.

Targumana (Dr. David Golomb) writes at length:

Baruch shekivanti! I think he suggests the same basic three points I suggested above, but works more to develop them:

  1. chiruf vegiduf, such that Tg Yonatan is trying to say negative things about them from the start; a connection between אנשים and Enosh.
  2. sharpness of intellect, something necessary for spies, who must think on their feet.
  3. fierceness, and he gives examples and justification.
He does not suggest that it is a taus sofer, though; and this, I still believe, is the best bet.
