Esnoga and the authenticity of the Zohar, as per Rav Yaakov Emden

Summary: Here I present a selection from Rav Yaakov Emden's Mitpachat Sefarim. He gives a number of pieces of evidence for late authorship in the Zohar, and this is the famous Esnoga proof. I provide the relevant excerpt, with translation and commentary where appropriate.

Post: In Mitpachat Sefarim, Rav Yaakov Emden provides the following proof for late authorship of the Zohar:

Behold, you will see in Raya Mehemna, parashat Ki Teitzei (282a) the following language: "And the Shechina is Nogah {brightness/Venus}, and Nogah to Esh. And from this, they call a shul "Esnogah".

And these very same things are repeated in the sefer haTikkunim (7a) with the following language:

{To interject, this is explaining the pasuk in Yechezkel 1:27:

27 And I saw as the colour of electrum, as the appearance of fire round about enclosing it, from the appearance of his loins and upward; and from the appearance of his loins and downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness round about him.

Also, the pasuk in Yeshaya 56:7:

7 Even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be acceptable upon Mine altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Finally, this pasuk from Yirmeyahu 31:21:

כא  עַד-מָתַי תִּתְחַמָּקִין, הַבַּת הַשּׁוֹבֵבָה:  כִּי-בָרָא יְהוָה חֲדָשָׁה בָּאָרֶץ, נְקֵבָה תְּסוֹבֵב גָּבֶר.  {ס}21 How long wilt thou turn away coyly, O thou backsliding daughter? For the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth: a woman shall court a man. {S}

The sefer Tikkunim has the following text:}

The third, כְּמַרְאֵה-אֵשׁ בֵּית-לָהּ, like the appearance of fire is a house to it, and this is the Shechina. For so the Sages have established it, that souls are compared, before the Shechina, like lamps {with single flames} before the torch. And because of this, like the appearance of fire is a house to it, and this is the shul above. E"sh Nog"ah, "כִּי בֵיתִי, בֵּית-תְּפִלָּה" -- for my house is a house of prayer, etc., so is the appearance of the the brightness all around {כְּמַרְאֵה-אֵשׁ, וְנֹגַהּ לוֹ סָבִיב , from the end of the pasuk} -- this is the Shechina below, about which is said נְקֵבָה תְּסוֹבֵב גָּבֶר, 'a woman shall surround a man.' And because of this, the appearance of brightness around is Esh Nogah."

{Then, Rav Yaakov Emden analyzes this:} Do we not see expressly that the explanation of the verse כְּמַרְאֵה-אֵשׁ בֵּית-לָהּ  is upon the bet tefillah which is called Esnoga. And so too, 'so is the appearance of the brightness {Nogah} is based on the shul which is called Esnoga.

And you should be astonished, for yourself, where this is found that a Bet Knesset is called Esnoga. It is not in Tanach, nor in the Targumim.  Nor in any place in the two Talmuds, the Bavli or Yerushalmi is the Bet HaKnesset called Esnoga as a single word.

(Although I don't know the Spanish language, I sensed this, for I have heard many times that Sefardim who are found in our place called a Bet Tefillah this, and so too you are able to see in a sefer -- see the Teshuvot of my father, my teacher {=Chacham Tzvi}, za"l, (Siman 38), a question written in Spanish Laaz and translated into Hebrew, and you will find this word Esnoga in place of Bet Knesset.)

And he made this (foreign) name into two words to use it to explain the language of the Scriptures. And one should not believe that these words were the words of Chazal, those who authored the Talmud, even Ravina and Rav Ashi. Nor even the Savoraim nor the Geonim in Bavel, for they did not know the Spanish language. (And there is no need to mention Rashbi the Tanna -- {Mishlei 9:4} 'who is thoughtless, let him turn here" to attribute it to him.) All the more to to make from it a foundation, as a matter known to all, and to explain with it the secret of the Scriptures as well as the Maaseh Merkava -- this idea is farfetched and strange to me. Rather, the truth testifies to itself that this, as well as all like it, found in this sefer is an interpolation, from a certain Sefardi kabbalistic Sage.

{Now, a gloss, not from Rav Yaakov Emden} (As to what the author of Itur Soferim, Rabbi Reuven Rapoport, comes with a complaint regarding this, that behold in the Talmud we find without end derashot on words in Tanach that are based on a foreign language. E.g., Totafot as Tat-Fat in Greek; Uriah as Aviria in Persian, etc. And there is no substance to this complaint. For behold the word Esnoga in Spanish is Esnoga, but it is a corruption and shortening of the Greek word συναγογε, which in European script is pronounced sunogoge. And this word is not found in any language of European languages except as synagoga or the like, except in the aforementioned Sefaradit {Spanish}, which Moshe de Leon was used to. (As is known, he dwelt in Spain, and is counted amongst the kabbalists of Toletola, except that he lived in the city of Leon in Sefarad.) And it is he precisely, precisely, for whom the derash is Esnoga with a Hebrew letter sin {rather than shin}, and this is as is known that the Sefardim did not distinguish between the two שs. (In every strange word if there were a samech demanded they would write a ש, such as in the names בנבנישת ,שלוניקי, and  ששפורטש, in all of which the ש is like a ס. And every word in Hebrew with a shin, they would write it with the letter ס, such as "Menasseh ben Yisrael".) And this is a sign that the author of it is Spanish. And furthermore, if it were some Tanna or an Amora, he would have darshened don't read Esh Nogah but rather synagoga, in the manner of the derashot of Chazal, in which they change a bit of the word being darshened, in this in Greek, which the Tannaim and Amoraim would have recognized, and with which they darshened many verses. And not Esnoga, which is only in Spanish, which finds no hint in all of their writings, and which at least, if they would mention it, they would at least need to say "for in the language of Spain they call a shul Esnoga" in order that the rest of the students in the city of Tiberias with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai would understand this!)
{This ends the gloss. Back to the words of Rav Yaakov Emden.}

And it is a wonder in my eyes how no sage amongst the Sefardim sensed this until today, these many hundreds of years at least, that which I wrote above with the aid of heaven, not a sage of the many and great sages of Sefarad into whose hands this hidden sefer came, with which they engaged greatly, assuming they were linguists. Also my father my teacher zal (the Chacham Tzvi), while he was an Ashkenazi, would converse in the language of Sefarad like one of the Sefardim who were born in that land. (Gloss: in the land in which he lived, we served as a rav, and these were exiled many of the exiled of Sefarad.) And all of his delight was in the sefer haZohar, albeit in private. And in all my days I never heard from his holy mouth even any remark of any sort of this strange insight. Of course, I was young when I left him, zatza"l, and I {Tehillim 81:6}, 'the speech of one I knew not I did hear', a quiet and clear voice did I hear. I relate the truth, so that no man should say that 'the speech of a child, etc.' {in the street comes from either the father or the mother -- see Sukkah 56b}, and attribute to my father my teacher an empty vessel {instead of attributing it to the yenoka}. Rather, I testify on heaven and earth that I did not come to this from any notice in the world, not even a light hint whatsoever from any man. Rather, Hashem was the one who woke up for me an ear, morning after morning to hear this as they are taught {Yeshaya 50:4}, to attach a rope to another rope to draw cold waters from a deep well, built upon pillars, and to search in treasures of gold, the sefarim, to know upon what their base was coined and upon what text / land  {thanks to Bar Uryan, in the comment section, for various corrections} their authors based them.

And if upon one witness a matter is not established, come and I will show you a wondrous chiddush in this, or more upon it...

This ends my translation from Mitpachat Sefarim, regarding Esnoga. Bli neder, more later. It is interesting how he takes pains to distance his father and anyone else he knows from this chiddush regarding authorship of the Zohar.

Re וכמש"ל בס"ד לא נרגש מזה, unless he made this actual point previously, R. Yaakov must mean the inverse; namely, that no one has addressed this aforementioned argument before.

Re לספק חבל בחבל, it's a term from Midrash Shir Hashirim intended to convey the act of tying a rope to a rope with the aim of reaching an inaccessible well.

I don't know whether he has a specific verse in mind, however, יסד and ארץ are a common pair in Tanach, and אר"ש is a classic pun for ארץ which I believe means 'text'; cf. לוח ארש (in this case a pun on ארז) by the same author.

You translate עם שאין אני מכיר לשון ספרדי to "Even had I not known the Spanish language." I think it actually means "Although I do not know..."
