Noach: The Tower of Bavel and the Development of Languages

A short narrative in Bereishit 11:
1 And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another: 'Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.
4 And they said: 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its top in heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.'
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the LORD said: 'Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do; and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do.
7 Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.'
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city.
ט עַל-כֵּן קָרָא שְׁמָהּ, בָּבֶל, כִּי-שָׁם בָּלַל ה, שְׂפַת כָּל-הָאָרֶץ; וּמִשָּׁם הֱפִיצָם ה, עַל-פְּנֵי כָּל-הָאָרֶץ. {פ} 9 Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth; and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. {P}
Is this how languages came about? Via miracle? Initially, everyone spoke a single language, but then, suddenly, God confounded their languages and they could not understand one another?

Ibn Ezra reads this differently. After all, Hashem says in pasuk 7 that he will confound their language. But, we see no mention of this action in pasuk 8. Rather, Hashem dispersed them. Then, as they were ruled over by different kings after Nimrod, and dispersed over various countries, their languages naturally deviated and developed. Pasuk 9 says how Hashem confounded the speech, by spreading them over the face of the earth.

Modern linguistic theory believes in language families, and draws a nice family tree of languages as they develop, one in accord with this basic idea.

Are you kidding??

no, I am not kidding.

now that I have explained that I am not kidding, would you care to elaborate with what aspect you find troubling or unbelievable?

Once you do that, I would (in all likelihood) be willing to elaborate.

repeated queries of "are you kidding" are unhelpful.

Also, it might be nice to identify yourself by choosing some pseudonym, so that I can know with whom I am dealing, as I deal with a lot of anonymouses.
