My novel explanation for the duplication of "virgin" and "no man knew her"

In an earlier post on Chayei Sarah, I noted the duplication of בְּתוּלָה וְאִישׁ לֹא יְדָעָהּ, and the interesting way in which many pashtanim, whose interest is to find the peshat, read import into this duplication. This list of pashtanim includes Rashi, Rashbam, and Ibn Ezra. Yet I said something akin to Ibn Caspi, that this is a sort of kefel inyan bemilim shonot, and that the purpose is to wax poetic about the physical merits of Rivkah.

Yet, I'd like to also put forth my novel interpretation of the reason for the duplication. As we know from Midrash Rabba and from Rashi (on parshat Toledot), Rivkah was only three years old when Eliezer came:

forty years old: For when Abraham came from Mount Moriah, he was informed that Rebecca had been born. Isaac was then thirty-seven years old, for at that time Sarah died, and from the time that Isaac was born until the “Binding” [of Isaac], when Sarah died, were thirty-seven years, for she was ninety years old when Isaac was born, and one hundred and twenty-seven when she died, as it is stated (above 23:1): “The life of Sarah was [a hundred and twenty seven years.”] This makes Isaac thirty-seven years old, and at that time, Rebecca was born. He waited for her until she would be fit for marital relations-three years-and then married her. — [From Gen.

As we read in Ketubot 11b:

and as we read in Niddah 45a:

Thus, if Rivkah just turned three and a day, then the statement that she was a technical betulah is of no consequence. Of course she would be, regardless of what she did! Therefore the Torah had to give us additional testimony, that veIsh lo yedaah.

Heh.

Yes, I know it is ridiculous. The difference is that I know that it is ridiculous.

Update: And now I'm embarrassed. Baruch Shekivanti! Gur Aryeh seriously considers this possibility, and explains why he dismisses it. In parshat Chayei Sarah:

Why is this ridiculous?

i'll try to explain in a post next week, bli neder. but i thought i was being rather silly when i came up with it. and i don't think that chazal in a midrash, or rashi, would come up with such a peshat, and that it is different from the explanations they (Rashi, Rashbam, Ibn Ezra) offered. this was all before i saw Gur Aryeh say a similar thing. I think that the type of explanations Rashi's supercommentators innovate to explain Rashi are of a different sort of neo-derash.

similarly, Gur Aryeh asserts that she could be labeled a naarah, even though Rashi based on a midrash says that she was three, because she was a very large three year old, and so looked like a 12 year old. this wouldn't be a maalah; this would be a chisaron, and there are easier ways to answer up rashi. indeed, that is why i often feel that Maharal is not true to Rashi's intent, and is nice neo-midrash, though one should not think one is really learning rashi by relying on this type of supercommentary.

but ridiculous was meant mostly as a self-criticism, and to make it clear that i was joking...

josh

I understood. But why isn't this true? She technically couldn't leave besulah status before three.
