Bechukosai - Keri

What does it mean to walk with Me "Keri?"

The pasuk in parashat Bechukotai reads:
21 And if ye walk contrary unto Me, and will not hearken unto Me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.
It is a strange word, but perhaps we can intuit what it must mean from context. At any rate, there is an interesting discussion of this in Shadal. But first, we should have the background of the ideas Rashi brings down:
Heb. Our Rabbis said that [this word means] temporary, by chance (מִקְרֶה), something that happens only sometimes. Thus, [our verse means:] “If you treat the commandments as happenstance, a temporary concern.” Menachem [Ben Saruk], (Machbereth, p. 1158) however, explains קֶרִי as refraining. Similar is, “hold back (הֹקֵר) your steps” (Prov. 25:17), and also, “he who keeps back (יְקַר) his breath” (Prov. 17:27). And this explanation [of לָלֶכֶת עִמִּי קֶרִי] resembles Onkelos’s translation, namely, denoting hardness (קשִׁי), i.e., [those who commit the sin of לָלֶכֶת עִמִּי קֶרִי] harden (מַקְשִׁין) their hearts to refrain from coming close to Me.
Shadal writes:
Thus, Naftali Wiesel explains keri from the word mikreh. Even with this evil happening {mikre} you go as you were going before. This is indeed awkward; as Shadal points out, the main idea of "as you were acting before" is missing, and all it says is "you go with me." And is this not similar to with God walked Noach?

I personally think it is plausible, because of prior context and because it is immediately followed by וְלֹא תֹאבוּ לִשְׁמֹעַ לִי which may be read as elaboration. Despite this, I am not persuaded that this is the correct explanation. Shadal continues:

Thus, Mendelssohn explains it as opposition. Shadal rejects this because where do we find the word לקראת to mean opposition, and in fact we find the opposite. And furthermore, in pasuk 28
28 then I will walk contrary unto you in fury; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins.
it is difficult to work into the wording, and so this is no explanation but rather perversion of the verse.

Shadal concludes:
Thus endorsing Onkelos' explanation, that it means hardness. Shadal suggests that it is rooted in an old tradition. Perhaps from the word קורה, but regardless, that this was a word known to our forebears as a tradition from their forebears. And it works in context.
