The great 19th century Mathematician, Gauss, published a paper on the subject. Interestingly he uses the Rambam's acronyms (transliterated) for the dechiyot. I was stretching my scientific German to fogure out what "wegen Adu" and "wegen Batu Thakpat" might be until I caught on.
Is there anyone who knows his conversion algorithm? He once told me the details in person many years ago, but I don't remember the details.
